Spark sees Aaron (Theo Germaine) hit it off with a complete stranger as part of a bizarre birthday party scavenger hunt, but then after that initial spark, he relives the same day over and over again. Stuck in a time loop, Aaron is determined to figure out why – why Trevor and why himself. Maybe it’s the increasing commonality of the genre, but the characters just keep getting weirder and weirder. | | 2024

After living the same day multiple times, Aaron figures out how to break out of it. To me, that’s the end, why would you get back into the time loop? Why would anyone choose to put themselves through that? Apparently, Aaron fell for Trevor. I don’t know why. Aaron was never particularly concerned with the fact that he broke the laws of time, just like how he is never concerned with getting out, he wants to learn more about Trevor. A stranger who wants to sleep with him but never reveal anything more about himself.
The movie struggles for its entire run-time because Trevor is not interesting to anyone but Aaron. And then Aaron becomes less interesting because he’s infatuated with a soulless asshole. This is not entirely fair, the ending actually becomes very interesting. The reason for Trevor and Aaron’s time loop is finally revealed and everything snaps into place. But I’m not a fan of movies not giving the audience a reason to keep watching until the very end. Surely they could have found a way to make Trevor more interesting earlier.
The physics behind this time loop is even worse. It’s never explained how, just having sex while wearing a cologne does it. Out of every possible reason movies come up with for how a time loop exists, a sex cologne has to be the stupidest. And this isn’t a spoiler, the sex part was revealed very early on.
This isn’t supposed to be about the science fiction, this is supposed to be about the relationship drama. It’s about why Aaron is drawn to a man who couldn’t care less about him (we never do get the “why” just that Aaron has this type of pattern), and ultimately why Trevor and Aaron are going through this time loop in the first place.
Spark is more exhausting than interesting, although the lead actor, Theo Germaine as Aaron, is fantastic, and it is a unique entry into the LGBTQ relationship drama.
